We are together
In warm comfort
Of each other
And our bed.
I watch you sleep
By the scattered illumination
Of white festive lights
Outside,
Shining through the frosted pane.
A perceptible hiss
Of falling snow
Compliments
The whisper of your breathing.
A gentle rise
And fall
Of your covered body
Gives assurance
Of your peaceful sleep.
My mind’s eye
Rises above me,
To drift up and out
To wander the night sky
Like a spirit.
I observe the lighted streets
Below,
Then elevate ever higher
To observe the city,
Sparkling like an open jewel box.
But Man’s handiwork pales
By the night sky overhead,
Shining with a different light
Of surpassing beauty.
Were it in my power
To reach out
And gather to my hand
The constellations above,
I would give them to you,
Glittering gifts
Of bright illumination,
Each a master piece
Of the Creator’s hand,
Radiating the same beauty
That shines
From within you.
I marvel at the Architect’s works;
Of light and image,
Form and spirit.
A stolen hand’s caress
Reveals
The exquisite undulation
Of your curves,
And rose petal texture,
Of your skin.
